Kiku

177 Fifth Ave, Brooklyn, 11217
Park Slope, at Lincoln Place

The tiny takeout counter on 7th Ave south of the F train station has branched out with a new sit-down venue one block south of neighborhood standby Nana, and its new neon sign is pretty much identical to Nana's. So out of loyalty I boycotted them for a couple months, till the staff at Nana pissed me off (long story) and I realized that the reviews of Kiku on Chowhound were actually super positive. So A. and I went. Kiku is small but well-appointed, and they play quiet music that's current without being obnoxiously trendy. As is fast becoming our routine at new sushi joints, I ordered a delicious bowl of chicken udon, and David got a tuna tartare appetizer, some rolls, and the sushi deluxe plate, which I "helped" him with. I'm not snobby about sushi, just super-paranoid about freshness. And Kiku was fine. As sushi places in the Slope go, I would rank it well below Blue Ribbon, a close second to Geido, above the sushi-related parts of Nana's menu and well above Oshima.

And maybe I have Kiku to thank for Nana's newly priced, more generous lunch special.

The Kiku on seventh avenue opened up two days after I moved into my apartment two doors north. I never thought it was great, but it was always affordable and just tasty enough. I'm sad I don't go there anymore.
