Sui
54 Spring St, New York 10012SoHo, between Lafayette and Mulberry
Months ago we walked past this place and I commented that it must be Chinese-owned, as the character for water which comprises this restaurant's icon is pronounced "sui" in Mandarin, but in Japanese it's more commonly pronounced "mizu." Since then we've had some quite nice sushi at Chinese-owned restaurants, and so we were eventually lured in by the 9.5 rating on Citysearch (which I'm now sure was faked).
The spicy tuna "Fire Roll" recommended on Citysearch was probably the best dish; though it came wrapped in a dried out chunk of proscuitto, the spice mixed into the oddly colored tuna drowned out all questions of its freshness, and the roll was accompanied by a drizzle of very tasty curry mayonnaise. The spider roll was the greasiest I've ever had, and the crab tasted definitely off. The "Jade roll" - red peppers, boursin cheese, cucumber, and a lonely and confused slab of indeterminate fish - was like a mad scientist's vision of a nightmarish future where all knowledge of sushi had been destroyed. Grilled chicken in pandan leaves was dry on top, rich on the bottom, and desperately in need of a pinch of salt - but the leafy greens grilled with the chicken were excellent. Go figure.
All in all, it was so not worth what the tab came to, I found myself wishing I could turn back time and eat somewhere else - anywhere else for dinner.
