Piu Bello

7009 Austin St. (@ 70th)
Forest Hills, Queens

Forest Hills is like a magical open-air mall dropped into a remote corner of New York, and we talked our Greenpoint friends into driving us the whole stressful winding way there in order to visit the divine gelateria Piu Bello, which sprawls over an area roughly the size of a downtown block, the entirety of which t is packed with teenagers and humming with life, even at midnight. The waitress greeted us with a smile and led us to the back, conjured up an empty table and chairs out of nowhere for us to sit in, and handed us each a multi-page plastic menu filled with lavish color photos of a variety of gelato sundaes. An hour later, in the dizzying throes of pre-diabetes, we staggered out perhaps ten pounds heavier in the flesh, and that much lighter at heart.

A. is a disciple of this place because it's the only gelateria we've found outside of Italy that serves melaverde or green apple, his favorite flavor (save a sickly imitation we ordered in Vancouver, Canada). I adore it the way it stays open past 2am on weekend nights.
