Geido
31 Flatbush Ave (@ 7th Ave)Park Slope, Brooklyn
When the restaurant is crowded, it can take forever to get your food. But man, is it worth it. Geido serves the kind of homey new Japanese food that you could get at the good places in St. Mark's Place in Manhattan, but with a great chill vibe.
Recommended:
- okonomiyaki: Japanese pancake/pizza made with cabbage, small pieces of squid, red julienne of ginger, and smothered in delicious tonkatsu-mayonnaise sauce)
- chicken katsu: perfectly breaded, served with egg, plump, sweet hijiki, and a little ginger)
- shumai: the soft melt-in-your-mouth Japanese version of the Chinese dimsum standard
- mackerel battera, a kind of sushi: fatty vinegared mackerel on rice, pressed into a box-shaped mold, with a thin slice of kombu, a seaweed that's a natural source of MSG, laid on top to heighten the flavor
