Blue Ribbon Sushi

280 5th Ave (@ 1st St)
Park Slope, Brooklyn

The space is gorgeous, incorporating traditional references like paper lamps, but done up with space-age materials. Pleasant techno in the background and a waitstaff that appears to be entirely happa. No reservations taken, but I haven't yet had trouble getting a table.

Haven't had any trouble yet with their specials either. The seto aji was delicious, light and fresh, served as a whole fish with the strips of sashimi resting on the skeleton, and then when you're done with the sashimi they take the skeleton, deep-fry it, and serve it back to you cut into delicious chips. Also enjoyed the crab and beet salad and the broiled scallops (which were a rather pricey $3 per bite-sized scallop) were served hot and caramelized on the half-shell. And the rice, ginger, and wasabi were painstakingly prepared, classic, and delicious - typically a sign of a top-notch sushi restaurant.

However, the fish on their regular menu seemed rather uneven. We ordered a hamachi kama there once and got a negihama maki instead, which was grainy and lackluster. I have a particularly soft spot for the spicy scallop roll made with sesame oil-infused mayonnaise, which was transcendent two out of the three times we ordered it.

I thought Blue Ribbon was mediocre, overpriced, and incredibly pretentious, and I haven't been back.
