Belleville

330 5th Ave (at 5th St.), Brooklyn, NY

Belleville's lunches and dinners are reputed to be good. I wouldn't know. We just go there for brunch, and we've gone maybe a dozen times now, and I can't seem to get unstuck from there and bring myself to go elsewhere, even with perfectly wonderful places right across the street from it. Someone on Citysearch complained that there was too much pepper (it's in the salad, the fries, and many of the savory dishes). I don't believe that's possible.

Most recommended dishes:

  • thin light waffles drizzled in syrup with two pristine slices of crispy bacon, pecans and powdered sugar.
  • the smoked fish platter: smoked salmon, whitefish, red onions, capers, lettuce, and a peculiar and heavenly whitefish salad on a chewy, starchy sesame seed bagel
  • the Petit Dejeuner Belleville, which is basically a baguette with perfect apricot jam and perfect butter.
  • the Merguez, a small lamb burger patty topped with a slice of grilled red pepper and pressed panini-style into a bolo roll
  • anything with a side of mesclun salad (fantastic oil-and-pepper dressing)
