Tabla

Next to 11 Madison, in Flatiron

One of my coworkers said about Masa: It was worth the money, but you don't see me rushing to go back there. That's roughly how I felt about our restaurant week Tabla experience, though the whole thing was sweetened with the presentation, to each of us, of $20.12 gift certificates toward a subsequent meal there.

I took a gamble by starting with the watermelon soup, and it paid off: cool and fragrant with Indian spices, suffused with oil from tiny fried chunks of bacon. The English pea samosa starter was more traditional and tasty. My entree, a vegan zucchini dish weighed down with salty-sour tomato sauce and drowning in a moat of coconut milk, was clumsy and I didn't finish it, but the dense chocolate cake dessert was extraordinary.

I'm definitely going back there because of their fantastic service, cool and sophisticated ambiance, reputation for great drinks, and most importantly, the gift certificate. But not anytime soon.
