Basso Est

198 Orchard St @ Houston, (212) 358-9469

After the unbelievable 9.9 rating on Citysearch I started to worry that this place must be a scam, especially when we got there and found the small, immaculate restaurant almost empty. The waiter was so pleasant and sympathetic it put me on guard, until the free bruschetta appetizer arrived. The tomatoes were seasoned with just the right amount of lightly garlicked olive oil and parsley so fresh it tasted like the leaves were still attached to the plant. We had a light, fruity, perfect sangria, so-so asparagus soup, very nice pear and cheese salad, spinach and mushroom fettucine, and ravioli in a light cream sauce, and my skepticism fell away like artichoke leaves.
