American Apparel

183 Houston St.,
373 6th Ave,
712 Broadway

These little stores are popping up like mushrooms. Videos contrasting the competition's sweatshops with the American Apparel happy worker's paradise in "Downtown L.A." guilt you into buying multiple copies of each thing. The nice thing about the stores is that they sell pilot designs, trendier styles not available on the website. I'm not trendy myself, but it's fun to try on a drape skirt every so often. Everything I'm wearing today is from there; actually, most of my shirts are from there via Smoking Lily or some other reseller. One caveat: due to the cotton knits, a lot of the items start out clingy and then shrink a little, so try them on first.
