Dear friends. It rained so much today that even I disliked it. The rain turned my scarlet shoes and scarlet umbrella burgundy, and then my feet inside my scarlet shoes turned scarlet. By night-time the torrent had died down into a steady drizzle. The coop was quiet and empty. I bought five packs of instant rice noodles and for dinner I broke two eggs into a bowl of rice noodle soup. Now I am baking ("processing") the leftover shells for the nourishment of my pet snail. I took a nap earlier in the evening, and will go back to sleep soon.

I'm re-reading Howards End, which has been sneaking up on me stealthily since the first time I read it about a year and a half ago. Without my even noticing it, it became one of my favorite books, possibly my very favorite, and so diving into it the second time feels like just having cleaned the house and now sitting down at the dining table with a glass of milk to one side, a chocolate cake on a plate in the center, and a knife and fork, and cutting the cake into precise little bites, and so forth.

With work the hours vanish like smoke. It's nice to eat dinner at home, nice that it's autumn again, nice to have a snail, nice to be married.
